Divide the stream by process source
A single factory can discharge cleaning water, production losses, cooling blowdown and concentrated batches with different chemistry. Composite averages may not represent the load that controls chemical treatment.
Map flow and quality by source and time. Equalization should be treated as an operating variable, not assumed to remove every variation.
Assign PAM a specific duty
Polyacrylamide can improve aggregation and solid-liquid separation when suitable particles are present. It does not by itself guarantee removal of soluble salts, dissolved COD or all color.
State whether the duty is primary clarification, DAF, tertiary solids capture or sludge conditioning. Pair the polymer test with the correct upstream and downstream process.
Screen ionic family with the actual matrix
Inorganic suspensions after coagulation may favor an anionic bridging route; organic sludge often enters a cationic screen; acidic or high-salinity streams may justify a low-charge comparison. These are starting hypotheses only.
Run equal-active-dose comparisons and include a blank. Measure response across normal and difficult wastewater conditions before approving a product.
Control pH and primary chemistry
Metal coagulant hydrolysis and particle charge are pH dependent. If pH drifts during polymer screening, a product can receive credit or blame for a change caused upstream.
Record chemical sequence, pH before and after treatment, and coagulant dose. Preserve rapid mix before gentle flocculation.
Translate the result to plant hydraulics
Bench mixing, pipe velocity, detention time and separator loading differ from full scale. Use a controlled plant step test with stop limits and sufficient observation time.
Check injection dispersion and avoid high-shear transfer after floc development. Sample both the separator effluent and the solids stream.
Build a procurement-ready data package
Include wastewater source, flow, chemistry, equipment, current chemical program, target measures, sample timing, required documents and destination. Note any substance or reuse constraints that affect product approval.
Use coded samples and active-basis calculations so supplier comparisons remain traceable from screening through production supply.
